They say schooldays are the best days of your life. Whether or not that is true, you have had many years when you have not had to think about the future, because you were far too busy getting through the present! It is a very stressful time getting through assessments and exams in order to leave school or college. But one day you will wake up and think, "
I'm leaving soon - what next?"
University or vocational courses? Going out to work straight away? These are the starting questions. Then you have to decide what you are going to study and why? Or where are you going to get a job? Are you thinking of Nursing because your Mum and your Grandma did Nursing? Are you thinking of Accountancy because you are good at maths? Decisions made now are important because they will affect the next few years of your life. On the other hand, life is different now in that it's no longer going to be a"job for life". You will see from the people around you that they sometimes change direction, or develop their lives in different areas as they change outlook and as their lifestyle and interests alter.
The most important thing to do now is something which YOU want to do and which will keep you motivated. Think about your life up to now. To get you reflecting, why not create a CV? This can be interesting and help you understand yourself. Not many teenagers have much to put on a CV yet, in terms of experience, but if you think of it in terms of a life story what would be on your CV? Here are some triggers to start you off:
- Have you always lived in one place or have you moved around? Do you speak any different languages? Have you been on any interesting trips with school or with clubs and groups?
- What are your best subjects at school? What do you most like about them? What do you least like doing and why?
- What are your hobbies and interests? Are you sporty? Do you like music? Do you collect something?
- Have you done any charity/community work?
- What are your personality traits? Do you consider yourself outgoing or more introverted? Do you love studying or do you prefer practical work? Are you a people-person? Are you technically minded? Do you have a passion or are you more of an all-rounder?
